More than just a patch

The story behind the design

This isn't just a random design. The ‘Winged Ripper’ is the work of legendary artist Vernon Courtlandt Johnson (VCJ).

  • Origin 1986: This image was used as the official emblem for the legendary Bones Brigade summer tour in 1986, initially appearing on T-shirts and stickers.
  • The killer detail: You'll notice the words ‘Extra Tough’ embroidered at the bottom of the patch. This is a historical reference to “XT”, the ultra-resistant ‘Bonite’ construction used on decks at the time before being replaced by 7-P (7 plies).
How to apply the patch:

  • Denim and cotton are the best fabrics to use (be careful with polyester).
  • Place the garment on a hard surface, such as an ironing board, and iron it to ensure it is nice and flat.
  • Place the patch where you want it.
  • Heat the iron to its hottest setting.
  • Place a thin cloth over the patch (this will protect the patch and any surrounding material).
  • Place the iron on the patch and press down as hard as possible for 15 to 30 seconds.
  • Remove the iron and allow the patch to cool.
  • Check the patch by gently rubbing the edge, trying to lift it up. If it lifts, replace the thin fabric and iron again for 10 to 15 seconds.
  • To ensure the patch is securely attached, we recommend sewing around the edges.
