Dinner’s to the Right, So Is the Therapy

An oversized entrance hall, a staircase curling up under a white banister, a vase on a red plinth and a sign pointing the way, arrow and all, to “Therapy Group Dinner”. Parra’s whole sense of irony lives in that scene. The Dutch artist likes to plant unease in elegant settings, using flat blocks of bold colour, thick black outlines and perspectives that sit slightly off. Here, burgundy, magenta, forest green and petrol blue play off each other inside an almost square frame, like an exhibition poster pulled off the wall to wear. A group therapy dinner in a grand townhouse: a joke about adult life, told without a word too many.

The artwork is screen printed with water-based ink, a more demanding technique than standard plastisol. The ink soaks into the fibre instead of sitting on top as a layer: the hand stays soft, the finish is matte, and the cotton keeps breathing under the graphic. The 240 gsm jersey makes for a dense, opaque base that carries the grey with no see-through. Relaxed fit, slightly dropped shoulders, ribbed crew collar. Branding comes from a black woven neck label and a small Parra tab sewn into the bottom hem on the left side. Made in Portugal.

The cotton is pre-washed, so there are no nasty surprises after the first wash: the measurements stay put. The heavy jersey keeps its drape and collar over time, even in heavy rotation. The water-based print ages with the garment: it may pick up a slight patina wash after wash, but it won’t crack or peel the way a raised print does. On its own in summer, under an open shirt or a denim jacket in between seasons, it works all year round.
