The Vato Rat logo was created by artist Craig Stecyk. A product of the Santa Monica Dogtown ‘Z-Boy’ surf-skate scene in the 1970s, Stecyk was steeped in Hispanic gang culture and graffiti. At the time, he was airbrushing many Zephyr surfboards and has incorporated this influence into his work. The Vato Rat is one of the many symbols he uses to decorate surfboards and mark his territory at local surf spots. In 1983, Stacy Peralta decided to bring back the Vato Rat in the form of a Powell-Peralta graphic. They called it ‘Rat Bones’ and used it in advertising, on boards, stickers and T-shirts.
