Daniel Johnston (1961-2019) was an American singer-songwriter and visual artist whose homemade cassette tapes earned him a devoted cult following worldwide. Alongside his music, he was a prolific illustrator, creating comic-inspired characters — including his iconic frog, central to his artwork and album covers. Despite lifelong struggles with mental illness, he gained recognition and admiration from peers including Kurt Cobain, Tom Waits and Sonic Youth.
