New Balance Numeric x Grand Collection
NM 770
- When a 90s sneaker reinvents itself for modern skateboarding -
Combining tennis heritage and New York skate culture, the collaboration between New Balance Numeric and Grand Collection marks the return of a discreet but cult silhouette: the 770. Originally designed in the 1990s, this pair is now reborn in a refined and technical form, adapted to contemporary skateboarding..
Originally designed as a cross-trainer in the 1990s, the CXT770 quickly found its place on tennis courts, recognized as one of the most stable models of its time. Thirty years later, New Balance Numeric has decided to give it a second life, drawing inspiration from its heritage while adapting it to the demands of contemporary skateboarding. The idea is clear: to offer “a more intelligent approach to building skate shoes,” combining technical innovation, durability, and comfort. But above all, it's designed for griptape.
The origins
CXT770
The New Balance 770 first appeared in the early 1990s, at a time when the brand was exploring different sports beyond running. It was launched under the name CXT770 and designed as a cross-trainer : a versatile shoe designed for general training, capable of handling multiple disciplines without being limited to a single use.
Quickly, this model found an unexpected niche: tennis. Thanks to its sturdy construction and particularly stable sole, the CXT770 was adopted by many players and considered one of the most reliable models of its generation for use on the court. Its chunky design, with a thick midsole and sculpted sides, embodied the sporty aesthetic of the early 90s, in line with the training and basketball shoes of the time.
After a few years, the CXT770 gradually disappeared from the New Balance catalog, overshadowed by the rapid evolution of the running and training ranges. Nevertheless, it remains in the memories of enthusiasts as a stable, solid shoe that epitomized the brand's technical experimentation in the 1990s.
GRAND COLLECTION
Founded in New York by Ben Oleynik, Grand Collection embodies a mature approach to skateboarding: sleek silhouettes, premium materials and timeless aesthetics. In collaboration with New Balance Numeric, the New York brand applies its high standards of craftsmanship to skate shoes, without compromising on function or style.
The 770 Grand Collection perfectly captures this encounter between performance and culture, tradition and modernity. A pair that embodies the rigour of skateboarding and the elegance of design.
On the technical side, New Balance Numeric has paid close attention to detail. The upper combines leather, suede, and a thin thermoplastic layer that protects the toe area from abrasion caused by griptape, an essential detail for extending the shoe's lifespan. The heel is reinforced by the system Counter Reinforcer Footframe, inherited from the original model, which incorporates a segmented frame in the midsole to ensure stability and support during landings. Cushioning is not neglected either, as the midsole incorporates foam FuelCell, renowned for its dynamism and ability to absorb impact while offering responsive energy return. The rubber outsole features a construction cup sole, a choice that guarantees both durability and control of the board, while a molded PU insert completes the design to ensure comfort and protection.
Hidden details are part of Numeric's DNA, and the 770 is no exception. It features concealed lace loops that limit lace breakage, an internal strap that keeps the tongue centered, and a double layer of protection at the front of the foot. These discreet but essential elements demonstrate a true understanding of skaters' needs. The shoe isn't just designed to look good; it's built to withstand the rigors of intense skateboarding while remaining comfortable for everyday wear.
The versatility of the 770 is another of its major assets. It can be worn for a skateboarding session, an urban outing, or even a more relaxed day. Its more generous fit makes it a comfortable shoe that can be adapted to a variety of uses. This idea of a smart hybrid, capable of navigating between different terrains, echoes the history of the model itself, which was originally designed for cross-training before being adopted by tennis. Today, it returns in the form of a sneaker that's ready for anything, from the street to the park, the gym, or everyday life.
The public's response speaks for itself: initial reactions have been enthusiastic. On social media, many have praised the quality of the materials, the relevance of the design, and Numeric's thoughtful approach. Many have also highlighted the shoe's apparent robustness, describing it as “borderline indestructible.” The return of the 770 is part of a broader initiative by New Balance Numeric, which is seeking to broaden the horizons of what a skate shoe can be. After drawing inspiration from basketball and running to reinvent models adapted to skateboarding, the brand is now turning its attention to cross-trainers, and the result looks particularly convincing.
The Numeric 770 isn't just playing the retro card. It embodies a true vision of the evolution of skate shoes: more technical, more durable, but still faithful to an authentic aesthetic. Straddling heritage and modernity, it perfectly illustrates New Balance's ability to innovate without denying its roots. For skateboarders and hybrid sneaker enthusiasts alike, it's a safe bet that this model will quickly find its place, both on boards and in wardrobes.
The New Balance Numeric 770 Grand Collection will be available on 17 October 2025 at a price of €130. It will be available in two colours, a full black version and its opposite in full white. Distributed in the best skate shops and, of course, here at empr.store, at midnight to be precise. It promises to be one of the season's flagship releases, so don't sleep on it!
